More Sonoma County public school students will taste and learn about local specialty crops under a new farm-to-school program from the School Garden Network of Sonoma County and the California Alliance with Family Farmers.
The two organizations jointly have received a $211,000 grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture.The groups will focus on schools with a large share of lower-income students in order to reach families “that have limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables,” according to a press release. Student families will be able to take part in “food access” and nutrition workshops.
The groups also will host field trips to specialty farms, especially those supplying local schools.“This really is a win-win for Sonoma County children, schools, farmers and the community,” School Garden Network board member Aimee Vorhaus said in a statement.
