Annual Petaluma River fall trash cleanup September 20

SONOMA RESOURCE CONSERVATION DISTRICT
Saturday, September 20th 9am to noon
Join the Sonoma Resource Conservation District and the Friends of the Petaluma River in our Annual Petaluma River Fall Trash Cleanup starting in Downtown Historic Petaluma. The event coincides with the 30th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, a national effort where thousands of participants gather locally to keep our coasts and inland waterways free of debris.
"Solving our water pollution problems requires everyone’s involvement" (California Coastal Commission, 2013). Our focus is to strengthen the ways in which we can help restore and protect the Petaluma River Watershed for years to come.
In 2012, Sonoma County COASTWEEKS combined cleanup’s collected approximately 10,487 pounds of garbage and 727 pounds of recyclables. The Petaluma River Cleanup in 2013, pulled a total of 1,010 pounds of trash and recyclables from the river and tributaries.
We hope to see you out on the river at this remarkable community event to enhance and protect our watershed!

Building a better bridge in Petaluma

Standing atop a column that will soon support a new bridge over the Petaluma River, Jeffrey Kress reached up, touched the underside of the existing span and felt the vibrations of thousands of motorists zipping along Highway 101 unaware of the work taking place just a few feet below the road.

Constructing a major bridge in the exact footprint of an existing one without disrupting road, rail or river traffic is a highly complicated dance, one that Kress, a senior bridge engineer at Caltrans, and his colleagues have been choreographing for months.

They are overseeing efforts to swap out the 60-year-old twin two-lane spans over the river with a modern, six-lane, $130 million bridge.

Critics of Petaluma asphalt plant proposal seek rehearing

The city of Petaluma and a coalition of environmental groups Monday asked a three-judge panel to rehear its appeal challenging Sonoma County’s approval of the Dutra Materials asphalt plant along the Petaluma River just south of city limits.

In a unanimous ruling last month, the 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco affirmed the 2011 judgment of Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Rene Chouteau, who found the county’s air quality analysis of the project was adequate and that open meeting laws had been followed.

The plaintiffs contend that the appeals court did not properly rule on the environmental and procedural questions.
